About

Hi and welcome to Away from Tenerife!

Away from Tenerife is a travel blog by a Tenerife expat living somewhere in Europe (Basel at the moment). I started Away from Tenerife in July 2012 to keep a record of my travels and to share my experiences, impressions and thoughts on living abroad.

I hope you find this blog interesting and somewhat inspiring!

So, you want to know who's behind Away from Tenerife?

My name is Irene and I was born in Tenerife 29 years ago. Since I was a little girl I was fascinated by the wonderful world "out there" and I spent most of my time daydreaming of the great worldwide trips that I would make when I grew up. It wasn't until my twenties that I got the chance to spend a year abroad as exchange student in Belgium. After a year traveling, partying and making good friends in continental Europe I knew that I wanted more and I didn't stay in Tenerife for long. I've since lived for two years in the Netherlands and I'm currently writing these lines from Switzerland (thank you, love, for bringing me this far).
The worldwide may still be waiting for me but I've already managed to fulfill my dream of living abroad and to travel quite extensively around some western European countries.

My passion for traveling has only grown with the years I've aged and the countries I've visited. Traveling has taught me many valuable lessons about the world and about myself and it has also nurtured my love for writing and pulled me to consider photography as a serious hobby.

  1. I think it's adorable that Lanzarote is on your wish list - it's close to Tenerife, right? However, I do understand this because I've long wanted to go to Scotland and at nearly 31 years of age have still never been!

    1. Yes, it is really close to Tenerife. Actually I'd like to visit all seven Canary Islands but so far I've just seen three.
I was in Edinburgh for NYE a couple of years ago and it was great! And the city was very beautiful, would love to go back there and also take some time to explore the rest of Scotland, it must be really impressive!

  3. I just looked up Tenerife and I had no idea where it was! It looks nice in the pictures! When I first saw where you came from, I thought you were from my home city because we have a suburb called Teneriffe! lol :-)

  4. Just found your blog and saw that you lived in Antwerp for a year! I studied there and it's one of my favourite cities ever (next to London of course) and I miss it dearly :) I love your blog and can't wait to read more!
